8 Japanese Aesthetics (和の八美学)
Wabi Sabi (侘び寂び)
A sensitivity that finds value in the beauty of simplicity, imperfection, and the passage of time.
Ma (間)
A beauty that resides in empty spaces or silence. Meaning is perceived in the “intervals” of space or time.
Yūgen (幽玄)
A world that evokes deep beauty and a subtle echo, without clearly revealing what lies beneath the surface.
Mono no Aware (物の哀れ)
A heart that feels poignant sadness and beauty in the fleeting brilliance or the finiteness of things.
In’ei Raisan (陰影礼賛)
An essay by Tanizaki Jun’ichirō. A Japanese aesthetic that finds beauty in darkness, the veiled, and shadows.
Komorebi (木漏れ日)
Not merely a natural phenomenon, but a symbol of Japanese aesthetic awareness: the ephemeral, tranquillity, and impermanence.
Fukinsei (不均整)
Unlike the Western golden ratio or perfect symmetry, this culture appreciates beauty in slight imbalance or asymmetry.
Enso (円相)
A circle symbolizing Zen thought, drawn with a single brushstroke in one breath. It represents enlightenment, the universe, the infinity of the mind, and emptiness (ku).
